What's New at Norwalk Hospital
* On Call "Night-Hawk" Teleradiology Service Beginging August '05.
Both the staff and residents at Norwalk Hospital have recognized that over time the overnight call responsibility has become more, and more strenuous. Although we understand the educational importance of taking overnight call, and learning to work autonomously, we feel this can be accomplished without overstraining the residents. In effort to improve the residency program, as of August 05, we will be employing a “Night-Hawk Tele-radiology” service (to cover emergency CT exams) from 10PM to 8AM, 6/7 days per week. The goal of this unique initiative is to enable the residents to absorb the benefits of taking call without being overburdened. This project will improve the residents’ quality of life, and enhance residents’ education. We expect the residents to use this additional time efficiently, to study, participate in research projects, and prepare for conferences and upcoming exams.
* New Department and New Office
In 2004, both the department of Radiology at Norwalk Radiology and Norwalk Radiology and Mammography Center completed major physical and technological renovations. Both facilities are now completely digital (“film-less”), with state of the art PACS systems. The combined department now features three MRI scanner including 2 brand new MRI units (1.5 Tesla closed unit and a .7 Tesla open unit). These scanners along with sophisticated software enables us to perform high resolution breast MR, breast MR biopsies, cardiac MR, and spectacular vascular, skeletal, body, and neuro imaging. Other highlights include 4 CT scanners (including 2 multi-detector CT’s), 3 new digital mammography units, a new stereotactic breast biopsy unit, digital fluoroscopy/radiography, and a laser system to treat disorder of the venous system.
We also have two new Vitrea workstations. This state of the art computer/software package enables us to evaluate both CT and MR images in multiple dimensions, and create incredible three-dimensional models reconstructions. This technology has been particular useful in both vascular and orthopedic radiology.
In addition to having state of the art equipment, both the hospital and office have been completely renovated, giving both facilities a fresh, new, crisp, clean appearance. In addition to being aesthetically pleasing, both facilities were specifically designed in order to maximize efficiency, improve work flow, and protect patient/physician privacy. This provides a pleasant, stimulating, and efficient work environment. The hospital renovation also included a new radiology library, a large radiology conference room (with a high definition digital projection system) and a spacious radiology resident call room, which contains a comfortable bed and internet/computer access.
